BIOGRAPHY: I will choose to research George Blake and Sarah M. (?) Blake as Emma M. (Blake) Grave's parents because of the information transmitted to me by Helen Lister, Historian, Belchertown, Massachusetts.
BIOGRAPHY: It would make sense that George Gilman Graves and Emma M. (Blake) Graves gave their parents' names while standing before the justice of the peace for their marriage ceremony.
BIOGRAPHY: Prior experience has also taught me that memories of ancestral names also become dim after information has been passed down through generations. The information in the Bible was certainly written after 1913, the date of the last b. entry on the page.
BIOGRAPHY: B. records of their children located in Belchertown, Massachusetts Town Hall indicate George Gilman Grave's address as Amherst, Massachusetts and Emma M. (Blake) Grave's address as Belchertown, Massachusetts.
BIOGRAPHY: The record may have stated their place of b. I traveled to Belchertown, Massachusetts during my very early trips for genealogical information and may have misread the information.
BIOGRAPHY: George Gilman Grave's baby dau., Mary Logan Graves was recorded in the Belchertown, Massachusetts Town Hall as having been ill since b. and d. within months after her b.
BIOGRAPHY: As I was reading this information, tears came to my eyes. I cannot imagine losing a baby so soon after its b., my dau. is very precious to me.
BIOGRAPHY: As a note of interest, George Gilman Graves and Emma M. (Blake) Graves were m. aft. the b. of their dau., Mary Logan Graves.
BIOGRAPHY: It has been suggested by Helen F. Lister, Administrative Assistant, Clapp Memorial Library, Belchertown, Massachusetts 01007 in her letter of February 3, 1993 that Emma M. (Blake) Graves did live in Amherst, Massachusetts with her husband and went to her family's home in Belchertown, Massachusetts to have her children. This sounds reasonable after much research on birthing practices of the era.
BIOGRAPHY: The following is an excerpt from Helen F. Lister's letter of February 3, 1993:
BIOGRAPHY: In reply to your letter concerning the parents of Emma Blake I can only tell you this: I found in the Vital Records of Belchertown the marriage on July 26, 1877 of George G. Graves of Amherst and Emma Blake of Belchertown - George Gilman Graves, age 26, painter, birthplace Sunderland (MA), and Emma, age 18, birthplace Belchertown. Parents of George Gilman Graves are listed as George Graves and Eliza A. Graves. Parents of Emma (Blake) Graves are listed as George S. (could be A.) Blake and Sarah M. Blake. Marriage performed by Franklin Dickinson, Justice of the Peace.
BIOGRAPHY: Now, I also found under Births that a female, no name given, was born June 17, 1877 to George Graves and Emma Blake.
BIOGRAPHY: Whether they lived in Belchertown after the marriage I do not know. It is possible, and prob., that they lived in Amherst and that Emma went to her parents home to have the children. George Blake, the farmer listed in the Gazetteer, lived near the Belchertown-Amherst line, and I would strongly believe he was the f. of Emma since I found no other Blakes at that time.

BIOGRAPHY: November 19, 1995
Dear Helen:BIOGRAPHY: I am writing to seek your assistance.
BIOGRAPHY: I would like to know if you could possibly locate the death records of George Blake and his wife, Sarah M./W. (Axtell) Blake. If you can, please let me know if there is a record of their place of birth, etc.
BIOGRAPHY: Sarah M./W. (Axtell) Blake may have died c. 1895. Something in the Northampton Hall of Records indicated that some property was passed down to one of her children during this year.
BIOGRAPHY: If you are unable to do this for me, I will greatly appreciate this request being passed on to someone who will be able to do some research for me.
BIOGRAPHY: You have helped me greatly in the past. Thank you, again.

Dear Ms. Dickinson:BIOGRAPHY: Helen Lister is no longer living in Belchertown. The library asked me to answer your letter. First let me introduce myself. I am Doris Dickinson. I was well acquainted with Helen when she was serving as curator of the Stone House Museum and worked with her as a volunteer. I am now curator of the museum and trying to fill Helen's shoes. A difficult job. We miss her and all the wisdom she had stored away.
BIOGRAPHY: I have been able to find the following information at the Town Hall regarding George and Sarah Blake.
BIOGRAPHY: Cemetery records show that George A. Blake (1824-1895) and Sarah M. Blake (1822-1888) are bur. in Dwight Cemetery in Belchertown.
BIOGRAPHY: Town Records, Vol. B, page 51 show that Sarah Blake d. December 5, 1888, age 65, of "epilepsy". Her parents are listed as unknown. Place of b. was listed as Edinboro, Scotland.
BIOGRAPHY: There is no listing of a d. record for George Blake. He may have d. elsewhere and was then brought to Belchertown for bur. If that is the case, there would be no town record.
BIOGRAPHY: In b 4, p 352 of Town Records, I did find a George Blake listed at the annual meeting on May 1, 1876 as being eligible for military duty.
BIOGRAPHY: I enlisted the aid of Robert Keyes for any listing of Blakes in Pelham. This town is next to a section of Belchertown called Dwight Station where Dwight Cemetery is located. He found no death records for George Blake at the Town Clerk's office during the period in which they supposedly d. You might want to write to the Town of Amherst to see if he was living with his dau. in Amherst when he d.
BIOGRAPHY: Cemetery records also show that a Frances H. Blake (1855-1876) and a Charles C. Blake (1865) are bur. in Dwight Cemetery.
BIOGRAPHY: The following is a letter from Kathryn Colleen (Hillis) Dickinson to Doris M. Dickinson, dated December 15, 1995:

BIOGRAPHY: Thank you so much for your letter! As usual, I asked my husband if there was any mail when he came in the door tonight. When he said there was something exciting for me I was so happy!
BIOGRAPHY: This is an interesting coincidence. I began looking for the Blakes in the British Isle records in my local LDS library a week ago. I couldn't pin anything down, so I will return to the library to look again.
BIOGRAPHY: If possible, please write back to me again. I would love directions to the Dwight Cemetery. I will probably come from the direction of Sunderland on Route 116 (I think that is the correct route number going into Amherst, not entirely certain).
BIOGRAPHY: I was relatively certain the Blakes lived at Dwight Station, either from a letter from Helen Lister or the County Gazetteer located in the Berkshire Athenaeum in Pittsfield.
BIOGRAPHY: Are you a member of the Dickinson Family Association? I thought I recognized your name from my mailing list, however, I discovered a Doris Dickinson from Vermont.

BIOGRAPHY: Hi, again! I intended to send the information I have on the Graves and Blake families.
BIOGRAPHY: I wonder if George A. Blake was b. in the British Isles somewhere, still had relatives there, and was visiting another country when he died. There is no record of his death in the Massachusetts vital records on microfiche in the Berkshire Athenaeum in Pittsfield.
BIOGRAPHY: Thank you, again, and looking forward to hearing from you.
BIOGRAPHY: encs: Complete information on Blake and Graves family histories.
BIOGRAPHY: P.S. I also think Emma may have been born either in another country or on board a ship. Has anyone else written to the Association about the Blakes? Looking for Elizabeth B. Parrish.
BIOGRAPHY: Letter from Doris M. Dickinson, curator of Stone House Museum, to Kathryn Colleen (Hillis) Dickinson, dated December 28, 1995:
BIOGRAPHY: Dear Kathy:
BIOGRAPHY: I have been visiting in warm, sunny San Diego for the past two weeks. I found your letter upon my return.
BIOGRAPHY: If I read my map correctly, Route 9 out of Pittsfield, Massachusetts would be your best route to Belchertown and Dwight Cemetery. Route 9 goes through Northampton, Massachusetts on to Amherst, Massachusetts (where Emily was born!!!) and goes right by Dwight Cemetery and through Belchertown. In fact, Route 9 goes by the two Dickinson homesteads in Amherst. Have you ever visited Emily Dickinson's home? It is owned by Amherst College.
BIOGRAPHY: Dwight Station was a small village within the town of Belchertown. The cemetery is not visible from the road - it is back in the woods. Needless to say it is one of Belchertown's oldest burial grounds. It is covered with snow and the road into it is not plowed. Spring would be the best time for a visit. I would be happy to meet with you and visit the cemetery and perhaps show you the Stone House Museum.
BIOGRAPHY: My husband and I attended several Dickinson Family reunions in Hatfield and Whately, Massachusetts many years ago, but we never joined the Association. I've done some research on his line back to the 1800's in Wethersfield, Connecticut. My line is Hawkins/Rollans and they are from North Carolina, Arkansas and Oklahoma. I have the Family Tree Maker program and have started to put my research on the computer. Sounds like you are way ahead of me!

BIOGRAPHY: I am having more and more fun hearing from you! Sounds like your trip was nice and relaxing.
BIOGRAPHY: We visited Emily's home a few years ago. I don't know if it is in my George Graves information, but my daughter was about five years old when we visited the home. When we arrived at the top of the stairs in the main hallway she wouldn't go any further. She said there was something in the cradle in the hallway. We had just come from West Cemetery where George Graves, his wife, daughter-in-law, grandchild, and possibly his son, George Gilman Graves are buried (and, I think, quite close to the Dickinsons). I had shivers running up and down my spine while we were looking at the gravestones. I have no idea why. My husband had to take Halea back out to the car because she was wailing and disrupting the rest of the tour members.
BIOGRAPHY: I did feel as though I was thrown back in time, even though some of the home (I suspect where the students stay, or part of the college has its administration) is probably somewhat modern.
BIOGRAPHY: George Graves and his family may have lived in one of the apartments over the Jeffrey Amherst Bookstore. I am curious to know so many things. I have so much research left to do in so many places. Sometimes I am discouraged by the amount of time I do not have.
BIOGRAPHY: We homeschool; I have a doll clothes business; and I love to do family history.
BIOGRAPHY: I am looking forward to visiting Belchertown in the spring. I have your telephone number and will call to make a date for a trek into the cemetery and a visit to the Stone House Museum. My mother will probably come, also.
BIOGRAPHY: One of the truly fun things to happen to my husband and me on our "journey back through time" is that we discovered we are cousins. We look enough alike that people have commented on the similarity frequently. I returned from the Berkshire Athenaeum in Pittsfield one afternoon, chuckling, and came into the house saying, "Hi, Cous!"
BIOGRAPHY: My husband also looks so much like a school acquaintance, that I was telling him for years that he should meet Chucky Dickinson in Schaghticoke, New York. We did some research and discovered that they are probably cousins within a few short generations.
BIOGRAPHY: Before I forget, I have The Ancient History of Wethersfield, Connecticut; Nathaniel Dickinson genealogical book; The History of Hadley; The History of Amherst; The History of Sunderland; and countless books on Colonial living, etc. If you need anything, please be sure to write. My mother purchased many wonderful books before she retired. Another amusing story. May fill you in when we get to meet you.
BIOGRAPHY: I tried to work with a computerized family history program. As you can tell, I write volumes of information, and found the programs limiting. They wouldn't allow me to fill in small pieces of information in odd places.
BIOGRAPHY: I am also an ex-graphic artist/secretary and find it very easy to arrange documents and drawings in a logical and attractive manner.
BIOGRAPHY: Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and I look forward to meeting you!
